It's time to have a bit more fun now that we've completed the important setup part of beginning a blog.


If you've never worked on a blog before, you could become a bit frustrated with this procedure when it comes to designing your WordPress site, but don't worry, it won't get too complex.


WordPress is your best bet if you want to build a blog and generate money from it.


Let’s cover some basic terminology, so you understand why WordPress is the right platform (also known as a Content Management System or CMS) to run your blog on.


What is a Content Management System (CMS)?


Your blog content will be written, designed, and published using a Content Management System (or CMS). A solid content management system (CMS) (like WordPress) is simple to use and allows you to organise your material, post photos and videos, and customise the look of your entire blog using themes and custom design features. WordPress is a content management system that you've probably heard of.

What is Wordpress?


WordPress is the most widely used content management system in the world, with millions of bloggers utilising it on a daily basis (including me). In fact, according to the most recent blogging data, this CMS powers over 60% of all blogs, including those for Forbes, New York Observer, TED, Thought Catalog, TechCrunch, NBC, and others.

Should I start a Blog on Wordpress (and is Wordpress free)?


There are other CMS solutions to consider (such as Wix, Squarespace, Tumblr, Blogger, Medium, or Ghost), but I strongly advise you to start with a self-hosted WordPress blog because it is the most long-term and sustainable CMS. It's completely free to use (you'll only need a web hosting plan) and the only alternative worth considering if you want to establish a blog with the intention of generating money in any way.

One thing to keep in mind is that WordPress is available on two different platforms. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different websites. They have nearly identical names, however there are significant variations between them:



WordPress.com:

  • Is free to use (with heavy restrictions)
  • Doesn’t let you pick a custom domain name (i.e. 👉 yoursite.wordpress.com)
  • Has very limited monetization options (you can’t sell your own ads)
  • Doesn’t let you upload plugins (for email capture and other things)
  • Has limited theme support so you’re stuck with very basic designs
  • You have to pay to remove WordPress branding and get your own domain like yoursite.com
  • Limited SEO and analytics

WordPress.org:

  • Fully customizable design, unlimited plugin options, and no branding
  • Total control over your own monetization efforts
  • Powerful SEO features (so people can find your site easier)
  • Let’s you start or add an eCommerce store or membership site
  • Small monthly fee (from the cheap hosting plan you use to get your blog online)

While the option is yours, WordPress.org is the way to go (and the precise procedure we've followed throughout this article) if you want to get the most out of your blog, have it grow with you, and eventually generate money from it. It'll be the CMS of choice for your blog, and it'll run in the background.


Choosing the best (free) Wordpress theme


I don't advocate buying a premium WordPress theme straight immediately if you're just getting started with your site. It's good to buy a premium theme with additional features and choices after you have some traffic and can justify the expenditure. However, for the time being, a complicated theme will be a distraction from your primary goal of attracting visitors to your new site.


Start with one of the free themes available in Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme > Popular without spending too much work on it for now. You may always modify it later if you want.

I propose Kadence WP, Elementor for WordPress, or Astra for WordPress (all of which are 100 percent free, fast and have the ability to upgrade later).


These three quick WordPress themes are my favourites since they're crisp, clean, and basic, and they'll get you up and running without the need to invest in a premium theme if you're just getting started with your site.


A well-designed blog establishes credibility. It shows that you care about your blog enough to make it appear beautiful. This does not need elaborate animations or a plethora of fonts and colours. In reality, the finest designs are straightforward, obvious, and simple to comprehend.


Once you've chosen the ideal theme for your WordPress site, it's time to explore the world of WordPress plugins, which may help you unlock even more adjustments and prep work so that your blog can grow into a viable company.


8 essential Wordpress plugins you should install on your Blog today

WordPress plugins are critical to the operation of your site, and having the most important plugins installed as soon as possible is a critical step that will benefit both your readership and search engines.

Faster websites rank higher in Google and provide a better user experience for your visitors. WP Rocket is a plugin that caches your pages, decreases file sizes, and does a lot more to ensure that everyone can see your site.

6. MaxCDN:

MaxCDN also makes photos and other static aspects of your site load quicker, giving it high ratings as a compliment to WP Rocket.

7. Insert Headers and Footers:

You may need to add code snippets to your header or footer to make changes to your theme (it's not as terrifying as it sounds). However, doing so in your theme's code may cause problems. This plugin allows you to simply add tiny snippets of code to various spots on your site.

8. Lightweight Accordion

With this plugin, you can rapidly add collapsible FAQ box functionality to your WordPress site with only a few clicks.



4. Write your first Blog post


You don't read a blog just because it's pretty or because it's updated regularly. (Though they are both beneficial.)

You read a blog because you are interested in what it has to say. Strong content is what will attract you readers and help you make money blogging in the long run.



What is a Blog niche?


A blog niche is more than simply a subset of a topic. It's the strategy you'll use, the target audience you'll target, the manner you'll communicate with them, and how you'll position yourself. A specialty doesn't have to be your passion (though it helps you stay devoted to your blog if it is), but it does have to be something you're interested in. The finest niches are intriguing enough that you'll want to keep writing, but yet accessible enough that you can grow an audience.

Does my Blog need to have a niche right now?

The sooner you can designate a specialty after your blog is up and running, the better. Your blog need a specialty since it gives it emphasis. Your specialty will determine how you plan your content schedule, design your blog, and advertise it. It also determines how your target audience will find you and how you'll network with other bloggers.


It's fine if you're hesitant or can't think of a specialty right immediately. With a few inquiries, we can elicit it.

Ask these questions to determine a smart niche to start a blog in:
  • What is a childhood fascination or dream that you find fascinating?
  • What is the most enjoyable portion of your day?
  • Do you have any interests or would want to learn some?
  • What is one of your most sincerely held values?
  • What is one accomplishment of which you are particularly proud?

You should have a few ideas for a defined topic you can start blogging about right immediately. It's fine if your specialisation expands, changes, and evolves over time.


To monitor the Monthly Search Volume, I like to utilise a free tool like Twinword Ideas (how many people are searching for this term each month).


Take a look at the results for each of your keywords. You've found a potentially successful niche if all of your top keywords have a Monthly Search Volume of 5,000–10,000. If you're getting close to that number, in the hundreds of thousands of Monthly Searches, you might want to narrow down your focus rather than compete with much larger, well-established websites on more popular topics.


Brainstorming smart Blog post ideas (using keyword research)


Even once you’ve established the niche you’ll be blogging about, you have to do smart keyword research in order to generate the right blog post ideas that’ll actually bring you readers.


So, what about the actual articles you'll be writing? The good news is that you can write anything you want! After all, this is your blog, and one of the key advantages is that it gives you a platform to talk and discuss. Ideas, on the other hand, do not always come easily.

6 ways to come up with clever blog post ideas


Here's how I come up with the specific blog posts I create for my personal blog using a simple procedure.

  • Observing what other bloggers in my field have written about (and what did well).
  • Examining my most popular blogs to determine what my readers enjoy the most.
  • Doing more quote roundup pieces that don't take a lot of creative thinking and work on my part (like my blogs about business advice and internet business tools).
  • In my office, I'm chatting with bloggers and coming up with new ideas.
  • I'm going to talk about some recent lessons I've learnt (and my advice).
  • I'm thinking about the blogging blunders I've made and the strategies that work now.

So, let's assume you've decided to start your hiking blog (like Hike with Adil) by delving into some of Yosemite's lesser-known hikes. Next, on your new post page, click the "Add title" tab and write in a title like...


Learn to write a great title by looking at the headlines of other successful bloggers in your field as a starting point:

  • Do they frequently begin with a number?
  • How many of their article titles have parenthesis in them?
  • Do you think it's a good idea to capitalise the initial letter of every word?
If you're still stumped on how to title a new article, run a Google search for the target keyword phrase you're pursuing and get some ideas from other bloggers' titles—don't duplicate them verbatim, but it'll get you thinking in the right direction.

Choosing an SEO-friendly blog post URL

It’s extremely important that you customize the URL of your new post, if you hope for it to rank well in organic Google search results.

Crafting a compelling introduction to your new blog post

You have one or two sentences to convince readers your new post is worth their time. Here’s a sample blog post introduction I just wrote in less than two minutes for our hiking example:

Answering the who, what, where, when, and why as soon as possible is the simplest technique for creating an engaging introduction. Another strategy is to start with your conclusion. This may seem paradoxical. People have gotten bored of wasting time on clickbait blog postings that lead nowhere in this age of short attention spans.

The faster you can create relevancy with your reader and offer them cause to believe they'll find what they're searching for in your blog article, the more likely they are to read it and share it.


Improving the look and feel of your blog post

Finally, what looks "good" is subjective and entirely up to you, based on what you believe your (future) readers would find most appealing. But one of the most essential lessons I've learnt from launching my own site is that design is really crucial.

1. Make sure your blog postings are easy to read.

Crazy colours, various typefaces, and a slew of pictures aren't what design is all about. It's all about making your reader's experience as pleasant as possible. Negative space is essential for your blog's legibility and readability, so don't start by cramming design components everywhere. Look for methods to help the process move more smoothly (a good WordPress theme should do this for you).

Next, make sure your font is large enough (for a blog, you'll want to go with a font size of 16pt or greater). You should also be cautious with line length. The optimal length of a sentence on your blog, according to most designers, is 50–85 characters since it keeps readers moving through the piece. 2. Always add a featured image at the top of your blog article that is relevant.

Our brain recalls information in two ways: audibly and visually. You'll have a greater chance of readers remembering your blog if you mix the two at the top of your article with a striking image.

Tip: Don't be concerned with custom-designed photos at first.

Take, for example, the guide's prominent image (at the top of this post). I strengthen my reader's connection with me by placing a relevant image at the top of the post (and superimposing the title on it).


3. Use subheaders often to split up your material.

Looking at a large wall of text might be overwhelming, and it may cause visitors to abandon your blog. Every 300-500 words, I recommend inserting a heading or sub-header. I also aim to incorporate photos around each header in my article to break up the flow of text, like I've done here.


4. Use style to draw attention to essential points in your content.

Your visitor will be guided through your topic by a great blog design. One of the simplest ways to achieve this is to use bold or italics to accentuate crucial points, as I do throughout this article. However, you can't state everything in your post is crucial, so use it selectively.


5. Make certain that others are aware of their whereabouts.

It's a good idea to include a small paragraph about yourself in the sidebar or bottom of your blog to establish a lasting connection and make visitors feel at ease.


These five tried-and-true design concepts will come in handy when creating a beautiful blog layout (that's simple to read).


Hitting publish on your first blog post


You're almost ready to publish your first blog article once you've written it (preferably in the 1,000+ word range).

Take a few minutes to double-check the Yoast SEO recommendations and make sure your blog post is SEO-friendly, which will help you rank higher in organic search.

Adding a few aesthetic components to a blog article may virtually double the number of views and increase the number of shares it receives.

Beautiful graphics and designs are one of the simplest ways to add visual flare to your blog entries. Thankfully, a lot of high-quality sites that offer fantastic imagery that is absolutely free to use for your blog have emerged in recent years—my personal favourite is Unsplash:

For fully free, user-uploaded photographs for your site, Unsplash is the greatest online resource. Unsplash's crew carefully selects each photo to ensure that it is of excellent quality. You don't even have to credit the photographer under the Unsplash licence (though they do advocate it), making Unsplash the most convenient alternative for free blog pictures.

Bonus: Creating a blog content strategy



Here’s how to create a basic blog content strategy today:

1. Define your blog's objectives: What motivates you to start a blog? What are your goals for your blog's content? This purpose may alter as your blog grows, but it's still crucial to know what it is from the start.

2. Get to know your blog's followers (and where they hang out) by doing the following: Your blog's success will be determined by the number of visitors it receives. To write for them, you must first understand them, which is why writing for yourself is beneficial. It's a good idea to do some research on the audience for whom you're writing. Consider your target audience's demographics and psychographics. Demographics refers to your readers' quantitative characteristics (age, gender, location, and job title), whereas psychographics refers to their non-quantifiable characteristics such as values, interests, attitudes, and belief systems. You may start creating an audience persona—a fictionalised representation of your ideal reader—once you've laid down these attributes.

3. Decide on the primary content pillars for your blog: It's helpful to have a few guiding categories to go to when determining what to write about.
